A grouping whose distinctly ethereal and cobweb sound to the highest degree defined the puzzling image of the record book label 4AD, Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland, in 1979. Taking their acknowledgment from an obscure birdsong from young man Scottish Simple Minds, the Cocteaus were to lead off with formed by guitar player Erithacus rubecola Woody Guthrie and bassist Volition Heggie and later rounded extinct by Guthrie's girlfriend Elizabeth Fraser, an perfectly solo performer whose swooping, operatic vocals relied less on whatever recognizable linguistic communication than on the subjective sounds and textures of verbalised emotions.

In 1982, the trio signed to 4AD, the arty British people tag then best known as the domicile of the Birthday Company, whose members helped the Cocteaus succeed a specialize. The grouping debuted with Garlands, which offered an embryonic taste of their quick development, atmospheric legal, crafted around Guthrie's creative consumption of distorted guitars, tape measure loops, and echo boxes and anchored in Heggie's rhythmical fresh water freshwater bass as intimately as an omnipresent Roland 808 alloy drum political machine. Curtly later the liberation of the Peppermint Hog EP, Heggie left field the mathematical radical, and Woody Guthrie and Fraser hack 1983's Capitulum Over Heels as a duet; nonetheless, the album largely perfected the Cocteaus' vaporous pattern, and established the grounding from which the radical would remain to devise for the continuance of its career.

In deep 1983, ex-Drowning Hysteria bassist Simon Raymonde joined the striation to record the EP The Spangle Shaper; as time wore on, Raymonde became an progressively essential component of Jean Cocteau Twins, piece by bit assuming an active function as a writer, organiser, and producer. With their lineup securely coagulated, they issued The Spangle Maker, followed by the LP Treasure, their virtually mature and uniform exercise in time. A burst of creativity followed, as the Gemini the Twins issued trey assure EPs -- Aikea-Guinea, Midget Dynamine, and Echoes in a Shallow Bay tree -- in 1985, trailed a year by and by by the acoustic Victorialand album, the Love's Easily Tears EP, and The Sun Myung Moon and the Melodies, a collaborative effort with minimalist composer Harold Budd.

With 1988's sophisticated Puritanic Bell Hillock, the triple signed an international contract with Capitol Records, which greatly elevated railway their commercial visibleness. After 1990's Heaven or Las Vegas, the Cocteaus cut away their longstanding kinship with 4AD; notably, the album as well establish Fraser's vocals offering the occasional comprehensible turn of musical theater phrase, a trend continued on 1993's Four-Calendar Coffee bar. In 1995, they explored a geminate of differing musical comedy approaches on simultaneously released EPs: piece Twinlights offered pernicious acoustic sounds, Separateness tackled ambient grooves, remixed by Seefeel's Mark Clifford. On the other hand, 1996's Milk & Kisses LP pronounced a come back to the band's prototypical vogue. Cocteau Twins quietly disbanded patch workings on an uncompleted follow-up. Posthumous releases followed, such as 1999's BBC Roger Sessions, 2000's Stars and Topsoil, and 2005's Lullabies to Violaine.
